Is grunge still as popular today as it was in the 90s?

No and it will probably never be as loved as it was when it started. Because there was so much raw talent when it first started. Many believe that the reason grunge started to decline was because of Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, grunge music effectively began its decline. Ironically, Cobain had often been photographed wearing t-shirts stating that "Grunge is Dead".

This is a time line for grunges uprising and its downfall

1990-By this time many bands had signed up with the seattle record label subpop such as Soundgarden, Alice in chains, Pearljam, and the newest Nirvana. Nirvana also releases its first album called Bleach. It did not get an amazing response.

1991-1991 was probably the biggest year for seattle sound. With the realease of Nirvana's Nevermind, and Soundgarden's Bad Motor Finger. Both of which are still highly acclaimed by grunge lovers everywhere. During this time grunge had exploded onto all radio stations and was quickly becoming the most popular form of music in the country. While all this was going on there was tension between the two most popular bands Pearljam and Nirvana. Because of their amazing success naturally there was tension but Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder quickly resolved this.

1992-There was nothing to be said about 1992 it was the quietest year for grunge yet none of the most popular bands released any new albums.

1993-Nirvana releses its third album In Utero, which is incessantly compared to Nevermind. Pearljam also released an album called Vs. They later recieved a grammy for their performance of the song Animal.

1994-This was probably the worst year for grunge ever. Soundgarden releases its most popular album SuperUknown. On August 10th, 1994, Kurt Cobain, lead singer and guitarist for Nirvana shot himself in the head after shutting himself in his room without the knowledge of his wife or neighbours.
His suicide note (and everything else about his life), have subsequently become treasured artifacts among his fans. Posthumously, Nirvana released an album of their 1994 performance at New York for MTV's 'UnPlugged' show.

1995-Grunge had pretty much officialy been shot in the face.

1996-SoundGarden released their last album as a band in 1996, titled Down on the Upside. Although an excellent album, this album spelled doom for the band. Lead singer Cornell was under heavy drug and alcohol abuse, and differences between band members finally ended with him walking out at the end of a jam session. But their was still hope for grunge although very little. Dave Grohl(drummer of Nirvana) created his own band The Foo Fighters. They were and still are one of the best bands ever made.
Now a new type of grunge was about to hit. Rap-Rock this paved the way for bands such as Korn, and my personal favorite band Rage against the machine.
